Easy Matcha Protein Shake Recipe

A matcha protein shake is somewhat like a cross between a matcha latte and a smoothie. It combines the earthy, vibrant green tea powder with creamy protein powder and milk to nourish and energize.

The mix of protein and caffeine is great for a quick after workout drink or if you just want a health way to skip your mid-morning coffee.

If you’re new to matcha or wondering how it compares to regular green tea, you can read more in my Matcha vs Green Tea guide. I break down the key differences in flavour, caffeine and preparation.

Why Make a Matcha Protein Shake?

There are plenty of reasons this shake deserves a spot in your daily routine:

  • Natural Energy: Matcha gives you a gentle boost of caffeine balanced by L-theanine which means no jitter crash. See research indexed by the National Institutes of Health.
  • Antioxidants: Matcha contains catechins known for supporting overall wellness.
  • Post-Workout Recovery: A fun twist on regular protein shakes. Protein powder helps rebuild muscle tissue, while matcha supports endurance.
  • Easy to Make: All you need is a few minutes plus a protein shaker or blender! Perfect for on the go, too.
  • Customizable: Try different variations of this matcha protein shake recipe to make it your cup of tea (pun intended).

Ingredient Notes

Ingredients for matcha protein shake on marble counter
  • Matcha: Choose a vibrant green matcha. The better the matcha, the smoother and less bitter your shake will taste.
  • Protein Powder: Vanilla protein powder is my favourite with matcha. Use whey, soy or a plant-based option depending on your dietary preferences.
  • Milk or Milk Alternative: Dairy milk, oat milk or almond milk all blend well.
  • Maple Syrup or Honey: Just a touch! This is also completely optional. Depending on the protein powder that you use, it may already be sweetened so you may not want additional sweetener.

In addition to the ingredients above, one important tool you’ll need is a shaker bottle with a blender ball inside of it. That will help you incorporate the powdered ingredients together with the liquid ingredients. If you don’t have that though, you can also use a blender.

Blending matcha green tea protein shake

In a protein shaker bottle or blender, add milk, matcha, protein powder and sweetener (if using). You can sift the matcha into the bottle or blender to help prevent clumps in your protein shake. Seal with lid and shake or blend until smooth and creamy.

Variations

You can easily customize this recipe, if desired. Add any of the following ideas for different benefits:

  • Oats: for extra fiber
  • Nut Butter: for healthy fats
  • Collagen: for skin and joint support
  • Espresso Shot: for an extra caffeine kick (hello, dirty matcha!)
  • Plant-Based Protein and Dairy-Free Milk: for a vegan shake
  • Ice Cubes: If using a blender, add a few ice cubes to make your shake thicker and extra refreshing.
  • Different Protein Powder Flavours: You don’t have to stick with vanilla. Give chocolate, chai, peanut butter or other protein powder flavours a try with matcha.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a matcha protein shake taste like?

A well-balance combination of earthy flavours (matcha) and sweet creaminess (vanilla protein powder).

Can I use water instead of milk?

You can use water. It will make this shake lighter. Using milk gives a creamier texture and richer flavour.

Is it okay to drink this before a workout?

Absolutely. Matcha provides sustained energy and protein powder supports muscle repair and endurance.

Does matcha have more caffeine than coffee?

Matcha contains caffeine, but less than coffee. Also, matcha’s L-theanine helps your body absorb caffeine more slowly, giving you calm, focused energy instead of jitters like coffee.
