Discover how to re-steep tea to get more cups and more flavour from your leaves. This simple guide explains how many times you can steep a tea, which teas work best for re-steeping and tips for multiple infusions.
What It Means To “Re-Steep Tea”
Re-steeping tea is a simple practice that allows you to steep the same tea leaves more than once. It is one of the easiest ways to get more from your tea leaves while exploring how flavours evolve over multiple infusions.
Certain teas, especially loose leaf teas, are designed to be steeped multiple times. With high-quality loose leaf tea, the second or third cup can sometimes be even more enjoyable than the first.
If you haven’t tried re-steeping your tea before, it’s worth experimenting the next time you steep a cup or pot. You may discover that your favourite tea has a lot more to offer than just one infusion!

Why Re-Steep Tea?
Re-steeping tea is a great way to get the most out of your tea leaves. Here are a few reasons why you might want to consider re-steeping your tea:
- Cost-effective: Re-steeping tea is a great way to make the most out of your tea leaves. By reusing the same leaves, you can get more cups of tea out of them, which can save you money in the long run.
- Sustainability: By reusing your tea leaves, you are helping to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.
- Different flavour profiles: The first steeping of tea leaves tends to produce a stronger, more robust flavour, while subsequent steepings tend to be milder and more delicate. This can allow you to experience different nuances and subtleties in the tea.

Re-Steeping Loose Leaf Tea vs. Tea Bags
Loose leaf vs. tea bags is a popular debate and it is important on the topic of re-steeping, too.

Loose leaf tea is the best option for re-steeping. The larger, whole leaves release flavour gradually. This allows multiple infusions that are still strong and do not become overly bitter. High-quality loose leaf tea can often be steeped 2-5+ times depending on the tea.
Tea bags can sometimes be re-steeped, but results vary. Most tea bags contain smaller broken tea leaves or dust, as they are meant to release flavour quickly during the first steep. Therefore, the second steep may be much weaker. However, you may still get a second light infusion, especially with larger pyramid tea bags that may be filled with higher quality tea leaves.
Re-Steeping Tea Blends vs. Pure Tea
Pure teas (like green, oolong, white, or black tea without added ingredients) are generally better suited for re-steeping because the whole leaves release flavour gradually over multiple infusions.
Tea blends can still be re-steeped, but added ingredients like fruit, herbs, or flavourings often give up most of their flavour in the first steep, making later cups milder.
Best Teas for Re-Steeping
Not all teas are created equal when it comes to re-steeping. Some types of tea are naturally suited for multiple infusions, while others may lose their flavour after the first cup.

- Black tea can sometimes be re-steeped once, but it’s generally less suited for multiple infusions compared to other tea types. The second infusion is usually quite light.
- Oolong tea is one of the best teas for re-steeping. Since many are tightly rolled or twisted, the leaves gradually open with each infusion. You can often get 3-5 (or more!) steeps, with each one offering a slightly different flavour profile.
- Green tea releases much of its flavour early on, but can still offer 2-4 additional infusions that become smoother and less grassy than the first cup.
- White tea releases flavour slowly, resulting in a soft cup that can be enjoyed over several steeps. Later infusions often become more mellow.
- Puerh tea is excellent for re-steeping because its aged and compressed leaves are designed to be infused multiple times, gradually releasing deep, rich flavours.
- Herbal tea is best enjoyed in a single, longer infusion. However, you can often enjoy a second cup if it is a blend that includes larger ingredients like dried fruits, whole flowers, roots, etc.
Step-by-Step Guide to Re-Steep Tea

Re-steeping tea can be done using both Western-style brewing (teapot or mug and infuser basket) and Gongfu-style brewing (gaiwan or small teapot).
Step 1: Steep the first cup normally
Prepare your tea using the recommended steep time and water temperature. Enjoy it as you usually would.
Step 2: Keep the tea leaves
After steeping the first infusion, do not discard the leaves or tea bag. Set them aside to keep them for the next infusion.
Step 3: Add fresh hot water
For the second infusion, pour fresh hot water (same temperature as before) over the same tea leaves/tea bag again.
Step 4: Slightly increase steep tea
Since some flavour has already been extracted with the first steep, the second steep usually needs 15 to 30 seconds longer.
Step 5: Taste and repeat
Enjoy your re-steep! If the tea still has flavour, you can steep it again. Many teas can be re-steeped 2 to 5 times and some even more. It will vary depending on the type of tea. You can re-steep a cup of tea until the liquid is basically clear!
Re-Steeping Tea Tips
- Use high-quality tea when possible. It re-steeps much better than broken leaves or tea dust.
- Increase the steep time. Multiple infusions typically require a slightly longer steep.
- Don’t let the leaves sit too long. If you plan to re-steep, do so within a couple of hours to keep the leaves fresh. Also, it’s just best to re-steep tea the same day as wet tea leaves can develop bacteria if left too long.
- Expect a lighter flavour. Each infusion will generally be milder than the previous one.
- Experiment. Each tea will offer different results. Tasting the changes is part of the fun!
