Turkey Tea Sandwiches

Turkey tea sandwiches are a great option for another protein packed savoury food to enjoy at afternoon tea. I like to make mine with a few other ingredients as turkey is very tasty with other flavours, too.

I layer my turkey sandwiches with apple slices and cheese. The apples provide a light sweetness to the turkey and often makes me think of Thanksgiving with apple stuffing.

Each bite includes sweet-tart apple, juicy turkey and creamy cheese. It is absolutely delish with the fresh flavour and crisp notes.

Serve this sandwich alongside other tea sandwiches or savoury bite-sized foods, scones like Lemon Rosemary Scones or Cheddar Chive Scones and sweets for a full afternoon tea menu. Don’t forget a pot of tea, too!

Recipe Highlights

  • These tea sandwiches are made with only 5 ingredients and take just a few minutes to put together.
  • This recipe makes 6 finger sandwiches which can serve 2 people or more if you are serving other tea sandwich varieties as well.
  • It is an easy-to-make finger food option for gatherings and tea parties!

Ingredient Notes

  • Bread: White bread is popular for sandwiches but whole wheat is a good option as well.
  • Turkey: Thinly sliced, deli-cut style is best. I like smoked turkey, too.
  • Apple: Gala or honey crisp work well here, but you can try other types of apples just make sure the slices are very thin so the sandwiches will not be too thick.
  • Cheese: Havarti is my cheese of choice for this sandwich. It adds a bright, buttery-like flavour.
  • Mayonnaise: The mayo binds everything together and keeps the sandwich from being dry.

Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise over each slice of bread.

Place 2 slices of turkey on a slice of bread followed by apple slices and cheese. Top it with another bread slice to close the sandwich. Repeat this step with the other 2 slices of bread.

With a serrated knife, remove the crust and cut each turkey tea sandwich into 3 rectangles or another shape, if desired. You should then have 6 finger sandwiches in total.

Serve and enjoy immediately!

Tips & Tricks

  • Add a bit of lemon juice to the apple slices to prevent them from browning quickly.
  • Tea sandwiches are traditionally served with the crust removed. So, don’t forget to cut them off as cleanly as possible.
  • If you’re not a big fan of mayonnaise you can substitute with butter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the best tea to drink with turkey tea sandwiches?

I’m always a big fan of black tea with tea sandwiches so I would recommend Orange Pekoe, English Breakfast, Earl Grey or other black tea blends that you may like. If you prefer a caffeine-free option, rooibos or honeybush are great too.

Can I make these finger sandwiches ahead of time?

Generally, tea sandwiches are best served right away. This recipe is no exception as the apple slices will brown if prepared too soon. Therefore, it is recommended to prepare these turkey tea sandwiches just before serving. Thankfully, they only take a few minutes to make!

What other tea sandwiches can be served with turkey tea sandwiches?

Serve these with a selection of other bite-sized sandwiches like Ham and Cheese, Cucumber, Carrot Ginger or Tuna.
