Ham & Cheese Tea Sandwiches

ham and cheese tea sandwiches recipe

Ham and cheese are the perfect pairing. Rich and salty ham is balanced by a sharp cheese like cheddar. It is a match made in heaven for tea sandwiches!

You don’t need to prep too much ahead of time for this tea sandwich either. When you trim off the crusts and cut it into finger sandwiches you have a delicious savoury course for afternoon tea. They are the perfect size for two or three bites!

However, you do not have to wait for a special occasion to enjoy this recipe or any tea sandwiches for that matter. Make a few for your own brunch, lunch or mid-day snack. Tea pairing is optional but highly recommended.

Ingredient Notes

Ham and Cheese Tea Sandwiches Ingredients
  • Bread: Thin sliced white bread is recommended.
  • Ham: Black forest ham slices (smoked, if you prefer).
  • Cheese: I use aged white cheddar cheese, but you can use any kind of cheddar cheese.
  • Mayonnaise: These tea sandwiches start with a creamy spread so they are not dry.
  • Mustard: Add some yellow mustard to the mayonnaise for a bit of acidity.

In a small mixing bowl, combine mayonnaise and yellow mustard. Spread a thin layer of this mayo-mustard mixture on the 4 slices of bread.

Place 2 slices of ham on a slice of bread followed by a slice of cheddar cheese and top it with another bread slice to close the sandwich. Repeat this step with the other 2 slices of bread.

With a serrated knife, remove the crust and cut each ham and cheese tea sandwich into 3 rectangles or another shape, if desired. You should then have 6 finger sandwiches for tea time.

Serve and enjoy immediately!

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I serve with these ham & cheddar tea sandwiches?

To complete the afternoon tea menu, serve these tea sandwiches with scones, sweets and a pot of tea. In terms of tea, I recommend a black tea or oolong tea to pair with the ham and cheddar cheese. You can also serve these with other tea sandwiches for variety.

Can I use a different type of cheese?

Yes. These ham tea sandwiches can still be made with a cheese that is not cheddar cheese. You can try it with gouda, harvarti, provolone or monterey jack cheese.

Can I make these tea sandwiches ahead of time?

I always recommend making tea sandwiches the day of as they are best served the same day. This risks the chances of the bread drying out or the sandwich filling making the bread soggy. Luckily, these particular tea sandwiches only take a few minutes to make!
