Cherry simple syrup is vibrant and juicy with a natural cherry essence that can enhance drinks and desserts. The tartness of cherries is balanced by sweetness. Make a batch with just 3 basic ingredients and store it in the fridge!
What is Cherry Simple Syrup?
Cherry simple syrup is a flavourful liquid sweetener that can be used in a variety of drinks including tea. It is an easy way to infuse beverages with a sweet and tart cherry flavour.
As the name implies, it is simple to make, similar to other syrup recipes on this blog. Combine cherries with sugar and water and simmer until it thickens into a syrup consistency.
Homemade cherry syrup offers a vibrant taste with a burst of cherries that is completely natural, too! No artificial flavours or colouring are in this syrup recipe.

3 Ingredients for Cherry Syrup
- Cherries: Wash, remove the pits and cut the cherries in half. If fresh cherries are not available, frozen cherries can be used.
- Water: You can use tap water or filtered water.
- Sugar: This recipe is made with white granulated sugar. Taste, consistency and colour may differ if another type of sweetener is used.
How to Make Cherry Simple Syrup
Ingredient measurements and full directions are in the printable recipe card below.
In a small saucepan over medium-heat, combine the pitted and halved cherries, water and granulated sugar.
Bring to a boil then reduce heat to a simmer. Simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally to make sure the granulated sugar dissolves.
You can also use a potato masher to mash the cherries as they are cooking into the syrup.
Remove the syrup from the heat and pour it through a fine mesh strainer to remove the cherry pieces.
TIP: The leftover cherries can be saved instead of throwing them away. Mix them into iced teas, ice cream, oatmeal or top pancakes and waffles.
Allow the syrup to cool before storing in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 weeks. Use it in iced teas, lattes, cocktails, mocktails and more.
