A turmeric latte (also known as golden milk) is basically sunshine in a cup! It features warming and healing spices whisked into milk for a soothing drink with an earthy taste. Naturally caffeine-free and high in antioxidants, this latte is great for the end of day or when you’re not feeling 100%!
What is Turmeric?
Turmeric is a spice that is native to Southeast Asia. It is commonly used in Indian, Middle Eastern, and Southeast Asian cuisine.
The active ingredient in turmeric is called curcumin. This active ingredient is responsible for the bright golden colour turmeric is known for and some health benefits.
Turmeric is available in several forms, including fresh turmeric root, dried turmeric powder, and turmeric supplements. Fresh turmeric root and dried turmeric powder are more commonly used for cooking. Supplements can be used to treat health conditions like digestive issues.
Turmeric Benefits
Turmeric is a spice that is widely used in cooking and traditional medicine due to its potential health benefits. Here are a few of those health benefits:
- Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Turmeric has powerful anti-inflammatory effects which can help reduce inflammation and joint pain in the body.
- Digestive Aid: The compounds in turmeric can soothe the digestive tract and assist with indigestion.
- Improve Brain Function: It may increase levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which helps with learning and memory.
Turmeric Latte Ingredients
- Milk: Dairy milk or dairy-free milk. My preference is oat milk.
- Turmeric: Dried turmeric powder, the star of the show!
- Other Spices: This latte also features ground cinnamon, ginger and pepper. You can adjust and add other spices. However, black pepper is important to include. It helps your body absorb curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric.
- Sweetener: Add a bit of maple syrup or honey to sweeten, if desired.
How to Make a Turmeric Latte (Golden Milk)
Ingredient measurements and full directions are in the printable recipe card below.
In a small saucepan on medium-high heat, heat milk with turmeric, cinnamon, ginger and black pepper. Whisk until well combined.
Remove from heat just before it begins to boil. Add maple syrup or honey, if using.
Pour the golden milk into a mug to serve. If you used fresh ginger instead of ground ginger, strain before enjoying!
For a frothy turmeric latte, add the mixture to a blender or use a handheld frother to froth. However, turmeric will stain the blender or frother so I highly recommend soaking and washing in hot water right away to avoid stubborn stains.
*Important Note: The spices may settle to the bottom of your cup, depending on the speed you are drinking this latte. So, be mindful of that as your last sip could be very spicy if you want to avoid that!
How to Remove Turmeric Stains
To remove those stubborn (but beautiful) golden yellow turmeric stains from your blender or frothing device, create a paste with baking soda and water.
Mix equal parts baking soda and water, layer the paste onto the stain and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Use a wet cloth to scrub clean afterwards.
