What is Oolong Tea?

The Tea Makers of London

Oolong is a type of tea that is semi-oxidized with leaves that can be curled, twisted or tightly rolled.

The unique flavour profile from an oolong tea can be described as a cross between black tea and green tea. This is because oolong can be light in taste or robust depending on the oxidation level.

Lighter oolongs like a Tie Guan Yin can be floral, fruity and even creamy. Darker oolongs like a Da Hong Pao can be nutty, roasted and even caramel-like.

Why You Will Love This Recipe:

  • Flavour Profile: Oolong tea offers a unique taste experience. Something different from a black tea latte or green tea latte.
  • Customizable: Adjust the ingredients to your liking, including, but not limited to the type of sweetener used.
  • Hot or Iced: This latte can be made as a warm and comforting drink or cool and refreshing!
  • Convenience: Easy and quick to make. You’ll have a coffee-house style latte at home in no time.

Ingredient Notes

  • Oolong Tea: A medium to dark roasted oolong tea works well as the robust flavours will stand up well to milk. Loose leaf or oolong tea bags can be used.
  • Hot Water: Oolong tea is best steeped with water just below boiling point.
  • Brown Sugar Syrup: Use homemade brown sugar syrup to sweeten the latte or you can use another sweetener like granulated sugar or honey.
  • Milk: Dairy or dairy-free milk (example: oat)
