What is Matcha Cream Cheese Spread?

This matcha cream cheese spread is a delightful combination of cream cheese and the Japanese green tea powder

The texture is smooth and creamy. The tangy flavour of the cheese balances the slight bitterness of the matcha.

This green cream cheese also adds a gorgeous pop of colour to many things!

Ingredient Notes

easy matcha cream cheese recipe
  • Cream Cheese: A block of plain cream cheese, dairy or dairy-free, whichever you prefer as long as it is softened.
  • Matcha: To really enjoy this recipe make sure you’re using a matcha you like. However, you do not have to use your most expensive matcha. Culinary grade made will do!
  • Confectioners’ Sugar (optional): This recipe is great without sugar, but you have the option if you want some sweetness.

How to Soften Cream Cheese

It is essential to soften the cream cheese ahead of time so that it is easier to mix the matcha into it and you are able to get a consistency that is spreadable.

To soften cream cheese, simply set the block of cream cheese out at room temperature for 1 hour.

For a quicker method, add the block to a bowl and set the bowl in another bowl of warm water.

In a bowl, add the softened cream cheese. Sift matcha and confectioners’ sugar (if using) over the block of cheese. Sifting the matcha and sugar will make it easier to mix them into the cream cheese with no clumps.

The amount of matcha you will use depends on how strong you’d like the flavour to be. I like this recipe with 2 teaspoons of matcha, but you can add more if you want a stronger taste.

Mix the cream cheese, matcha and confectioners’ sugar (if using) together until well combined. The finished product should be smooth, lump-free and beautifully green. You can mix by hand with a spoon or beat with a hand mixer for quicker results.
