A milkshake is a delicious frozen treat any time of the year. It is easy to make one at home and to take it to the next level, you can flavour it with tea. This earl grey tea milkshake is thick and creamy with strong notes of the bergamot infused black tea and vanilla. It’s basically like a London Fog milkshake!
What Is An Earl Grey Milkshake?
A milkshake is a cold and sweet beverage that is made with just ice cream and milk. However, additional ingredients can be added for flavourings like chocolate, fruits, syrups and more.
In this case, the additional ingredient in this recipe is earl grey tea. This black tea gives it a bold and citrus flavour that complements the vanilla ice cream.
Since there is caffeine in the black tea, it also makes it a caffeinated milkshake.
If you are a fan of London Fogs (earl grey tea latte with vanilla) then you will definitely need to try this milkshake recipe since the flavours and creaminess are similar. It is just a frozen mixture instead!
What You Need To Make This Recipe
You really only need 3-4 ingredients plus some toppings, if desired.
- Earl Grey Tea
Use your favourite earl grey tea for this milkshake recipe, loose leaf or tea bags. If needed, you can find earl grey tea recommendations here. - Milk
Instead of water, the earl grey tea will be steeped directly into milk before blending the milkshake. Any type of milk will do. - Vanilla Ice Cream
The best milkshakes are made with real ice cream. - Vanilla Extract
This is an optional ingredient since there is already vanilla flavour from the ice cream, but if you would like a stronger vanilla taste add a tiny amount of extract. - Toppings
Top the serving glass with whipped cream. If you’re feeling fancy, you can even make earl grey tea infused whipped cream. I also like to add rainbow sprinkles on top.
In addition to the ingredients above, you will need a blender (regular or immersion). If you do not have a blender, you can use a food processor or stand mixer. If you don’t have either, you can also try this method.

Step 1: Make earl grey infused milk.
Warm up milk by adding it to a small saucepan on medium-low heat. Remove from heat when bubbles form around the edge and steam is present. Do not boil.
Add earl grey tea (loose leaf or tea bags) to the warm milk and steep for 5-7 minutes. When the time is up, strain the tea leaves or remove the tea bags and let cool.
Then, chill in the fridge for 1-2 hours. You want the tea infused milk to be cold before adding to the blender for the next step!
Step 2: Assemble the tea milkshake.
In a blender, add vanilla ice cream, earl grey tea infused milk and vanilla extract (optional). Put on the lid and blend on low until smooth and creamy.
Pour into a tall glass, top with whipped cream and sprinkles (optional). Serve and/or enjoy immediately!
Tips & Tricks for Making the Best Tea Milkshake
- For an extra creamy tea milkshake, use whole milk instead of other milks. As mentioned earlier, any type of milk can be used in this recipe. However, keep in mind that the higher the fat content, the creamier the milkshake.
- Place your serving glass in the freezer for a bit. This will help the milkshake stay colder for longer when served.
- If the earl grey milkshake is too thick for your liking, add an extra splash of milk. Alternatively, if it is too runny, you can add extra ice cream, one scoop at a time. Don’t add ice as it will just water down the milkshake.
- Do not over blend! This will heat the ingredients up and create a runny milkshake, despite the ice cream and milk ratio used.
How to Make Dairy-Free Earl Grey Milkshake
You can easily turn this recipe into a dairy-free version! To do so, simply use your favourite dairy-free vanilla ice cream and plant based milk.
I just recommend a more neutral milk alternative option so it doesn’t overpower the earl grey flavour. And again, a creamier dairy-free milk option will make for a better tasting milkshake.
Coconut milk is great because it is thick and creamy but the taste may be too strong so you can also try oat milk or soy milk.
Also, don’t forget about a dairy-free whipped cream if you’d like to top the milkshake!
