You no longer have to ever decide between a matcha latte or a chai latte. Instead, combine the 2 teas to make 1 amazing beverage! This matcha chai latte recipe can be enjoyed hot or iced.
What is a Matcha Chai Latte?
A matcha chai latte is an intriguing blend of powdered green tea and spiced black tea.
Matcha is a Japanese green tea (tencha) that is finely ground into powder form.
Masala Chai is spiced tea. In fact, it literally translates to that! “Masala” means spiced and “Chai” means tea.
Traditionally, masala chai is made with tea, milk, sweetener and a variety of spices.
When you combine the 2 teas, you get flavours of the smooth, earthy Japanese matcha and sweet, warm Indian chai together.
Is there caffeine in a green tea chai latte?
Yes! Matcha is a caffeinated green tea and chai is made with black tea which is also high in caffeine.

Ingredient Notes
This may sound like a complicated recipe, but you really only need about 4 ingredients!

Water
To make an iced matcha chai latte, cold water is needed as you will be making cold brew matcha first. For a hot version, no water is needed. Instead, you will be whisking the matcha in the next ingredient!
Chai Concentrate
Store-bought or homemade chai concentrate works (make this easy recipe in advance!)
Milk
This recipe can be made with any dairy or non dairy milk.

FOR ICED MATCHA CHAI LATTE
Start by making cold brew matcha:
Sift matcha into a bottle or jar that has a tight lid. Add cold water, seal and shake until the matcha is smooth with no clumps. This may take about 15-20 seconds.
In a glass with ice, add chai concentrate.
Pour milk over the ice then the cold brew matcha.
Garnish the latte with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon or a cinnamon stick. Stir to combine before drinking!
FOR HOT MATCHA CHAI LATTE
The ingredients are the same for this hot version, except no ice or cold water is required.
In a small saucepan, heat up the chai concentrate then add to a mug. If the chai concentrate is not sweetened, add a teaspoon of sugar or another sweetener of your choice here.
Sift matcha into a mug. Add the hot chai concentrate and whisk together until smooth. You can use a handheld frother or bamboo whisk.
Heat and froth milk until it has almost doubled in volume. Top mug with frothed milk. Sprinkle ground cinnamon on top before enjoying it!
Recipe Note:
The homemade chai concentrate I use for this recipe is pre-sweetened. To get the layered iced latte, you will need to use a sweetened chai concentrate for the base.
If you are using an unsweetened chai concentrate you can add 1 teaspoon sweetener of choice to this recipe if desired.
