June 3rd marks my blogiversary! To celebrate, I wanted to create a fun tea latte that you can easily recreate at home and cheers to The Cup of Life tea blog. For my birthday last year I celebrated by sharing my Birthday Cake Scones recipe. So, when I was brainstorming ideas for my 11th year blogging about tea I thought back to that delicious scone creation and how I could replicate it as a tea latte instead. Introducing the Birthday Cake Tea Latte. A rich black tea combined with warm vanilla for cake batter flavour and topped with airy whipped cream and rainbow sprinkles. This recipe will explain how you can make an iced or hot version, too.
Why You Will Love This Recipe
- Made with loose leaf black tea or tea bags, the recipe is super simple
- It is a sweet treat that can be made in just minutes
- You don’t have to wait in a long line at a cafe for this drink
- Caffeinated, creamy birthday cake in a cup (or glass)
- Perfect for many occasions…not just birthdays or blog anniversaries!
Behind the Birthday Cake Latte Recipe
Usually when you find birthday cake lattes in cafes they are made with coffee and even a birthday cake flavoured syrup. This version is made with tea instead and you don’t need any fancy coffee syrups either!
– Black Tea
This black tea latte recipe is best with a pure tea like Assam, Ceylon or even Orange Pekoe tea bags! Don’t use a flavoured black tea or a black tea blend as it may interfere with the birthday cake essences. Steep either of the approved black teas in freshly boiled water (100°C/212°F).
– Sugar
Birthday cake should be sweet, so don’t forget sugar! Granulated sugar is recommended. But, you can adjust the amount to your liking.
– Vanilla Extract + Almond Extract
A classic birthday cake flavour is vanilla, so this ingredient is important! Pure vanilla extract is usually preferred, but imitation vanilla extract works in this latte. A small amount of almond extract can help mimic the cake batter flavour. However, it is optional, especially if there are nut allergy concerns.
– Milk
You can use any milk that you prefer. I like 2% dairy milk or oat milk for a dairy-free option.
– Whipped Cream
Top this hot or iced tea latte with store bought or homemade whipped cream.
– Sprinkles
Rainbow sprinkles are a must. In addition to vanilla, you can’t have birthday cake flavoured treats without the rainbow sprinkles. The more colours, the better!
