I started to add a splash of brown sugar syrup to my morning cup of black tea after I had made a fresh batch. Since my morning tea of choice is quite strong and sometimes astringent, adding the syrup resulted in the perfect amount of sweetness with hints of molasses. On the days the sun is shining, I like to enjoy this sweet and creamy concoction over ice. This Iced Brown Sugar Black Tea Latte recipe is super simple to make. A malty black tea and milk are paired up with brown sugar syrup for a deep caramel-like sweetness plus a hint of toffee flavour. You will enjoy a caffeinated and refreshing drink in no time!

Milk Tea Vs. Tea Latte: What’s the Difference?
Milk tea is (yup, you guessed it!) milk with tea. Often the types of milk used are condensed, evaporated, or whole milk as they are extra creamy but you can find dairy-free options as well.
It can be enjoyed hot or iced. Add tapioca pearls or boba for bubble tea.
Milk tea can be made with different types of tea but black tea is most popular. Jasmine Milk Tea and Roasted Milk Tea (made with hojicha) are also common to find.
Tea lattes are a style of milk tea. Similar to coffee-based lattes, tea is usually topped with frothed or steamed milk. It can be made hot or iced.
So, you could call this drink Brown Sugar Milk Tea. But, despite it being called milk tea, the original Brown Sugar Milk Tea from Taiwan doesn’t actually contain tea. It’s just brown sugar, milk and tapioca pearls.
This recipe does have tea in it though. This is also a brown sugar milk tea without tapioca pearls. Therefore, I refer to this drink as an Iced Brown Sugar Black Tea Latte instead.
Ingredients for this Recipe
– Black Tea
I recommend a bold black tea like Assam or Ceylon. Those types of black teas are often in breakfast tea blends so you can use an English Breakfast, Irish Breakfast or Scottish Breakfast tea, too.
– Water
Black tea should be steeped with freshly boiled water (100°C/212°F). Although, since this is an iced drink you could even cold brew the black tea prior to making the tea latte.
– Brown Sugar Syrup
Don’t buy this! Make it at home in less than 3 minutes with just 2 ingredients. Here’s the recipe.
– Milk
Use your favourite milk in this latte. However, you may need to adjust the amount of brown sugar syrup depending on the sweetness level of the milk. I like about 1.5 tablespoons of syrup when using 1 percent milk.
– Ice
