The winter and holiday seasons are filled with so many delightful flavours. One of my personal favourites is peppermint. I love peppermint bark, peppermint whipped cream, peppermint cheesecake and much more. The minty fresh taste is not only festive but comforting during a freezing cold day, too. On its own peppermint tea is smooth and slightly sweet with a cool finish. It is wonderful to use when making tea infused hot chocolate and when paired with the popular green tea powder you can make a peppermint matcha latte. It is the ideal cozy drink once the temperatures drop (or when National Peppermint Latte day arrives), but can be enjoyed any time of the year!
What is Peppermint Tea?
Peppermint is considered a hybrid mint. It is a cross between watermint and spearmint. The leaves are green with sharply toothed edges and produce a strong aroma.
Peppermint tea can be made with fresh peppermint leaves or dried peppermint leaves. The leaves can be steeped loose or in a tea bag.
Peppermint tea does not come from the tea plant, Camellia Sinensis. Therefore, it is technically a tisane. It is also naturally caffeine-free.
What is Peppermint Matcha?
Peppermint matcha is a green tea powder that is mixed with the fresh mint taste from peppermint.
This latte recipe is a combination of matcha and real peppermint tea. This recipe does not use premade peppermint matcha powder nor does it use peppermint extract or peppermint flavoured syrup.
Ingredients for this Peppermint Matcha Latte Recipe
This recipe only has 5 ingredients or just 4 if you wish to make it sugar-free!
– Matcha
This latte will only be as good as the matcha you use. Grab your favourite matcha for lattes or find a few recommendations here.
– Peppermint Tea
Instead of whisking matcha in hot water, this recipe calls for whisking it in steeped peppermint tea. Prepare the tea with either peppermint tea bags or loose leaf. The recipe below has measurements for both.
– Hot Water
Even though you are not preparing matcha in hot water, you still need it to steep the peppermint tea!
– Sugar
You are welcome to substitute this for a different sweetener or just omit it entirely if you’d like to make a sugar-free peppermint matcha latte.
– Milk
Most often I use 1% or 2% milk. To make this a dairy-free peppermint matcha latte, I recommend oat milk. It froths like a dream and the taste isn’t overpowering like some other dairy-free milks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I just use a peppermint flavoured matcha powder?
There is such a thing as peppermint matcha, but I wouldn’t recommend it for this recipe.
Peppermint flavoured matcha can vary. Some are made with matcha and microground peppermint or peppermint oil while others can just be a lower quality matcha blended with natural or artificial flavouring. They’re not guaranteed to be sugar-free, too.
The main part of this latte recipe is to whisk 100% pure matcha into steeped peppermint tea.
Although it may seem more simple and quicker to skip this step and just use peppermint matcha, you won’t get the same results. You will get a stronger and more consistent peppermint flavour in this matcha latte when using peppermint tea instead.
How can I make sure there will be no matcha clumps in this latte?
Sift the matcha prior to whisking! You can do this with a fine mesh sieve like a small kitchen strainer or even a tea strainer.
This important step will help you get a smooth tasting matcha because no one loves matcha clumps in their latte.
I don’t have a bamboo whisk. Is there another way I can make matcha?
For sure! A bamboo whisk (or a chasen) is a traditional tool used to make matcha. Not having one doesn’t mean you can’t make matcha at home.
You can use a frother, blender or even a mason jar. Check out this article to learn how.
Can I make this into an iced peppermint matcha latte?
Yes! I usually drink this peppermint matcha latte during the colder seasons so having it hot is extra comforting.
However, if you would love a cool and super refreshing matcha latte, simply pour the matcha in a glass over ice after whisking it in the peppermint tea. Then fill the glass with cold milk. Instead of a warm froth, top with whipped cream. It’s just as tasty!
Peppermint Matcha Latte for the Holiday Season
Even though this tea latte recipe isn’t limited to just the holiday season you can’t help but get in the spirit with a green latte like this one!
However, if you want to make it more festive I recommend garnishing it with some candy canes. Either crush them up and top the froth with the pieces or add a whole candy cane to the mug before serving.
How to Make a Peppermint Matcha Latte
This tea latte recipe serves 1
Here is what you will need:
1 teaspoon matcha
2 teaspoons peppermint tea or 2 peppermint tea bags
1/2 cup hot water
1 teaspoon sugar
1/3 cup milk
peppermint candies, crushed for garnish (optional)
Directions:
1. In a teapot, add the peppermint tea leaves or tea bags and hot water. Cover and let steep for 5 minutes.
2. While the peppermint tea is steeping, sift matcha in a bowl. Set aside.
3. If using a handheld frother, add milk to a small saucepan and heat on the stovetop. Froth until it has doubled in volume.
If you do not have a frother, you can try whisking it by hand. The results will be a bit different though. It won’t double in volume, but may have a thin layer of froth.
Alternatively, if you have an electric frother follow the instructions to froth milk in that device.
4. When the peppermint tea is done steeping, strain the loose tea leaves or remove the tea bags. Pour into the bowl with the sifted matcha. Using a bamboo whisk or frother, whisk the matcha into the steeped peppermint tea then pour into a mug.
5. Stir sugar (or another sweetener of choice) into the mug until it has dissolved. Top mug with frothed milk and sprinkle with crushed peppermint candies.
Happy sipping!
