Iced English Breakfast Tea Latte

Even though I am not a coffee drinker, I can still appreciate a caffeinated cup first thing in the morning. In fact, I love starting the day with a bold black tea. Most often I take this type of tea with a splash of milk. When the temperature is begging for it, I’ll even pour it over ice and before you know it I have an iced black tea latte. This morning tea of choice is usually an Assam or Ceylon but often I’ll steep English Breakfast tea which is traditionally a blend of both. An iced English breakfast tea latte is the beverage to wake you up and cool you down all at once. Similar to a coffee based latte this is made with a strong black tea, milk and ice for a highly caffeinated drink.

Ingredients for this Iced Black Tea Latte

English Breakfast black tea
Loose leaf or tea bags work here. The recipe below has measurements for both. Not all English Breakfast teas are equal, so make sure you use one that you have enjoyed in the past.

Freshly Boiled Water
This recipe calls for a black tea, therefore it should be prepared with water at 100°C/212°F. For the best tasting drink, fill your kettle with fresh water. Don’t use stale water and don’t re-boil water. Learn more about how to steep tea properly here.

White Sugar
No fancy flavoured syrups needed. Simple white sugar is perfect for this black tea latte.

Milk
I usually use 2% milk or oat milk for a non-dairy option. But, you can use any milk you like.

Ice
Similar to the water used for making tea, make ice cubes with fresh, filtered water if possible.

What is English Breakfast tea?

English Breakfast tea is the most popular breakfast tea blend. It is a staple in the United Kingdom. Traditionally, it is a blend of two black teas — Ceylon and Assam.

However, the ingredients for this black tea blend will vary depending on the brand.

This breakfast tea blend has a bright flavour and brisk astringency. It is commonly enjoyed with a splash of milk and sugar.

Is Earl Grey & English Breakfast Tea the Same?

They are both popular black tea blends, but the similarities end there. An earl grey tea is known for its aroma and flavour from bergamot oil.

English Breakfast tea is not blended with this citrus oil or any other oil for that matter.

What is an English Breakfast tea latte?

This tea latte starts with the classic black tea blend. It is then combined with sweetener and milk for a creamy and comforting latte.

It is important to note that a tea latte of any kind is made with double strength tea. This means more tea than water is used to steep an extra strong tea. This way the flavours of the tea is not lost in the latte when all of the milk is added.

An English Breakfast tea latte can be enjoyed hot or you can pour it over ice for a cool pick me up instead.

If you’re a frequent Starbucks customer, this can be compared to the Royal English Breakfast tea latte on their menu.

Does English Breakfast tea latte have caffeine?

Yes! Since this is a black tea the latte is high in caffeine making it especially great for the morning to jump start your day.

Iced English Breakfast Tea Latte Recipe

Serves 1

Here is what you will need:

2 heaping teaspoons English Breakfast black tea, loose leaf (or 2 tea bags)
1/2 cup water, freshly boiled
1 teaspoon sugar
1/3 cup milk
ice

Directions:

1. In a teapot, add the English Breakfast tea leaves or bags and freshly boiled water. Cover and allow the tea to steep for 5 minutes.

2. Strain the tea leaves or remove the tea bags when done steeping. Add sugar and stir until dissolved. Always add your sweetener when the tea is still hot. It’s easier to mix before it cools down and you add ice.

3. Pour the steeped and sweetened English Breakfast tea in a glass filled with ice. Don’t fill the glass completely with tea, leave some room for milk.

4. Top the glass with milk. Give it a stir to combine all of the ingredients and enjoy immediately!
