A while back I shared a recipe for a hot salted caramel hojicha latte. After much love from myself and others, I wanted to create an iced version too. Iced caramel lattes are a favourite in coffee houses and tea lovers shouldn’t be left out! With this version, you can enjoy the fun drink with less caffeine but similar warm, toasty notes. This is because hojicha is a roasted green tea and it is sometimes labelled as a coffee alternative. Plus, with low caffeine levels, an iced caramel hojicha latte can easily replace your afternoon iced coffee without sacrificing the flavours. It’s just as rich, sweet and creamy. Best of all, there’s no heat involved with my method so you can make this latte in 3 minutes or less!
What I Use to Make this Iced Caramel Hojicha Latte
– Hojicha Powder
If you have read past posts on this blog, then you may have heard about hojicha powder already. This tea powder is made by grinding loose leaf hojicha until it is fine. You can drink it straight similar to matcha, but it’s very popular to make as a latte or use in baking recipes.
– Caramel Sauce
You can’t have an iced caramel latte without the caramel! I use store-bought caramel sauce and in a pinch I’ve even used caramel syrup before. There is a difference between the two. Caramel syrup is a bit thinner and sweeter. If you can find caramel sauce, go for that instead.
– Oat Milk
This is just my personal favourite milk to add to some teas. It has a more neutral taste so it doesn’t overpower the other flavours in this tea latte. You can use your own favourite milk though.
– Cold Water & Ice
You don’t need a kettle for this latte recipe! The hojicha powder is mixed in cold water before combining it with the caramel sauce, milk and ice.
Iced Salted Caramel Hojicha Latte
There’s a recipe on my blog already called Salted Caramel Hojicha Latte. This is a slightly modified iced version of that latte recipe.
I don’t typically make this iced version salted, but you can easily do so if that’s what you’re craving. To turn caramel sauce into salted caramel sauce quickly, simply mix in sea salt before using it in this recipe.
Consider making hojicha salt at home and mixing that in the caramel sauce for even more roasted tea flavours in this latte! Find a quick hojicha salt tutorial here.
Dairy-Free Caramel Sauce
To make this iced caramel hojicha latte vegan, use your favourite dairy-free milk, but also watch for the caramel sauce you use!
The caramel sauce used in this recipe can be store-bought or homemade. If you need a vegan dairy-free caramel sauce but have no luck finding one in stores, give this simple recipe from Wallflower Kitchen a try!
Frequently Asked Questions
Is hojicha powder similar to matcha?
Hojicha powder and matcha are both Japanese green teas. When you consume either of these teas you are ingesting the entire leaves. But, they are very different from one another. Learn more here.
Does this iced caramel tea latte have caffeine?
Yes. However, it’s much lower when you compare it to a coffee-based iced caramel latte. Hojicha is known to be a tea that has lower caffeine levels.
The roasting process for this green tea is what reduces the caffeine level. This mild tea can easily be enjoyed at any time of the day.
Can I make this with loose leaf hojicha?
You could, but hojicha powder has a stronger flavour profile when compared to loose leaf hojicha. Therefore, hojicha powder is highly recommended.
If you use a lighter hojicha tea the flavours might be masked by the caramel and milk. For this iced latte to be successful, all of the flavours should be well-balanced.
Also, since we are essentially cold brewing hojicha powder in this recipe, it will be much faster than steeping or cold brewing loose leaf hojicha. With hojicha powder, you’ll be sipping on this delicious caramel latte in no time!
Where do I buy hojicha powder?
Hojicha powder can be found online at an affordable price. To make sure you’re buying the best, check out my recommendations here.
Iced Caramel Hojicha Latte Recipe
Serves 1
You can double this recipe with no changes needed, though!
Here is what you will need:
1 teaspoon hojicha powder
1/2 cup cold water
1/3 cup milk
2 tablespoons caramel sauce
ice
pinch of salt (optional)
Directions:
1. Drizzle caramel sauce inside a glass. Try to get the caramel sauce on both the bottom and sides of glass.
To make this an Iced Salted Caramel Hojicha Latte, mix a pinch of salt in the caramel sauce prior to drizzling in the glass. If you want to get extra fancy, make hojicha salt and use that!
2. Fill the glass with ice then add milk of your choice.
3. Sift hojicha powder in a resealable bottle or jar. Add cold water, seal and shake until dissolved. This method is similar to cold brew matcha. You don’t want to see hojicha powder clumps so keep shaking until the cold brew hojicha is smooth.
4. Pour hojicha in the glass over the milk. Stir and enjoy!
