If you’re curious about what my daily tea drinking looks like, this post is a documentation of all of my steeps from a single day. What I tea in a day is a play on the popular what I eat in a day series. I started a tea version of this series back in 2017 and continued it the following year. I think I’m long overdue in sharing another one! To change things up a bit, this look is from a holiday Monday (during quarantine, too) and features steeps from a tea tasting for work. So, my tea habits are a bit different from the other times I shared a post like this. From early morning to night, here is my third “episode” of what I tea in a day.
– What I Tea In A Day, May 18, 2020 –
7:45a.m.: Dark Matter black tea blend from Geek+Tea
It’s no surprise that I started my day with a black tea. This blend is from a new-to-me Canadian tea shop called Geek+Tea. It’s essentially a raspberry earl grey and is filled with ingredients the blender grows herself. I actually featured this blend in Amoda Tea’s May box.
In addition to the black tea and bergamot oil, this tea is also blended with dried raspberries and raspberry extract, orange peels, rose petals and rosehips, pineapple, wild strawberry leaves and safflowers. It’s exciting to find a raspberry earl grey that features real raspberries and not just flavouring. Since I typically enjoy my Earl Greys and other breakfast teas with a splash of milk, I did just that with this cup.
9:30a.m.: Ceremonial Matcha from Encha
It was a Monday so I obviously had to whisk up some matcha (#MatchaMonday #MatchaEveryday). It usually provides a “zenergy” for a work day, but during this holiday I was craving it for comfort. I was originally feeling like an iced matcha latte, but the weather was cold and rainy so the traditional way was just perfect.
1:15p.m.: Tea tasting for Amoda Tea
I had scheduled tea tasting as part of my day. For those that may not know, I curate teas for Amoda Tea’s monthly subscription boxes and sampling teas is part of my job. Tasting tea is a bit different than just drinking tea. For instance, I prepared all of these teas according to the directions from the tea company and did not add anything to them. I also had a few sample size cups of each, not a standard 8 ounce mug each.
During this tasting, I sampled 1 green tea, 1 white tea and 1 herbal tea. They were all blends and had summer fruit flavours as I’m currently curating for July & August boxes which are iced tea themed. 2 out of 3 teas I tasted were winners in my book and may be coming to an Amoda Tea box soon.
5:45p.m.: Jasmine green tea
After tasting a few blends earlier in the afternoon that were quite fruity, I really wanted something more simple. Since it’s spring and the flowers outsides are starting to bloom (slower than usual though) I decided to go for something floral. A simple, yet crisp jasmine green tea was near by and so in to the teapot it went. I saw this as a perfect opportunity to grab one of my floral vintage teacups to use, too. I made a whole teapot of this tea, which filled up my teacup 4 times.
8:30p.m.: Berry + Hibiscus herbal blend
I have been trying to end the day with a caffeine free steep lately. Caffeine doesn’t usually bug me at night, but I have quite a bit of herbal teas I need to use up. This herbal tea was just a sample size without a label, so I’m not entirely sure what it’s call or where it is from but given the colour and the flavour profile, it was definitely a berry and hibiscus blend. Truthfully, it wasn’t my favourite as I don’t normally like hibiscus heavy blends hot. It would have been much better iced or cold brew I think. Nevertheless, it still satisfied my nightly tea craving.
Overall, this holiday Monday (May 18) was a good tea day. I stayed with my routine of a black tea and matcha in the morning and got to try a few new teas in the afternoon. Enjoying 5 out of 7 teas I had is a success in my books.
Today’s tea count: 7 teas // 1 black, 3 green, 1 white, 2 herbal
