Cheddar Chive Scones

When scones come to mind we often think of a sweet, fruity and glazed treat that is served with clotted cream and jam. However, a crisp and tender scone can also be savoury. Even though I’m a big fan of classic English scones or fruit infused scones like cranberry and blueberry, a savoury option like these Cheddar Chive Scones is nice once in a while to change it up a bit. Use your favourite cheddar cheese, fresh chopped chives (easy to grow indoors!) and you will have some freshly baked scones in less than 30 minutes. This recipe is a must for your next brunch or tea time!

These scones are crispy on the outside and soft in the inside. If you have a sweet tooth to satisfy, these are not the scones for that as they have very little sugar. However, if anything, being less sweet and more savoury makes it harder to stop eating the entire tray.

When deciding on a savoury version of my classic scones, I opted for an herb and a cheese. I am a big fan of cheese and it pairs so well with tea, too. I wanted to include a fresh herb that would add a pop of green but also have a not-too-pungent flavour. While fresh chive is preferred, if you are unable to find it at your grocery store or do not have a green thumb, you can use dried chives.

What do you serve with savoury scones?

Long story short, you can serve whatever you like best with these savoury scones. My personal favourite is butter. But if you still want to top these with something sweet like jam, then you most definitely can. You can also serve savoury scones with a cheese spread, chutney or just leave them plain. Yes, they are that good!

These scones are definitely still delicious with tea time, but since they are savoury you do not have to wait until dessert to dig in. Pair these Cheddar Chive Scones with a soup or salad, too!

Cheddar Chive Scones

Scones don't always have to be sweet, fruity and glazed. This recipe is a great introduction to savoury scones. Best enjoyed warm with butter!
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 15 minutes
Total Time 25 minutes
Servings 8

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 6 tablespoons cold butter
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese grated
  • 1/3 cup fresh chives chopped
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  • 1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

    2. In a mixing bowl, sift flour, baking powder, salt and sugar.

    3. Using your finger tips or a pastry cutter, cut cold butter into the mixture until coarse.

    4. Add onion powder, cheddar cheese and chives.

    5. In a separate bowl, whisk milk and egg until combined then add to the dry ingredients.

    6. With a spatula, fold the mixture together until dough forms. Place the dough onto a floured surface. Gently form a smooth ball. Pat down on the dough until the surface is even and it is about 1.5 inch thick.

    7. Use a knife or a scone cutter to cut out scones and place them onto the lined baking sheet. Lightly brush top with milk.

    8. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from tray and place on a wire rack.

    9. Serve warm with butter and a cup of tea!

Notes

This recipe makes 8-10 scones. The amount depends on the size of the cutter you use or the triangle sizes you cut.
