Koicha Matcha Affogato

Green tea ice cream was always something I looked forward to as a kid. I would rush to the ice cream section of a popular buffet the second I finished my main meal. This matcha ice cream treat reminds me of those memories. Koicha is a thick-style matcha, different from the thin-style matcha (usucha) you may be used to for everyday drinking. It is typically prepared for special occasions. The main differences between these two styles are the texture and flavour. This style is made with more matcha, and less water to create a thick tea with no layer of foam on the surface. It has a strong flavour, which makes this concentrated version delightful for a matcha affogato.

What is an Affogato?

An affogato is an Italian dessert that consists of a scoop or two of ice cream with hot, black espresso poured over it.

In fact, the word affogato means drowned, which is essentially what happens to the ice cream when it meets the espresso.

This cool treat is a great representation of less is more. The best thing about it is that it takes 2 minutes to make, but despite the simplicity, it’s still quite delectable.

This koicha matcha affogato is a bit different than some other matcha affogato recipes. Similar to the Italian version with espresso, most matcha affogato recipes use the thin-style of matcha and the ice cream will float when combined.

If you’re looking for a matcha affogato recipe like this, I highly suggest checking out Mel Had Tea or The Tea Squirrel. Since this version is thicker, the matcha acts more like a syrup (or magic shell as it hardens!) for the ice cream.

Typically when preparing koicha matcha you would use your highest grade of matcha. However, since we are not making koicha matcha to drink straight, using a less expensive grade would work perfectly here.

Any bitterness from the matcha would pair nicely with a sweet, chill spoonful of ice cream.

The choice of ice cream is up to you. For this recipe, I used vanilla, but you can also use chocolate, strawberry, or even a green tea ice cream if you wish to amp up the tea flavours!

Koicha Matcha Affogato

Making a thick style matcha allows you to create something similar to a magic shell when pouring your warm matcha over the cool ice cream.

Ingredients

  • 2 scoops ice cream
  • 2 tablespoons hot water ~165 degree F
  • 2 teaspoons matcha sifted
  • fruit chocolate shavings and/or nuts (optional)

Instructions

TO MAKE KOICHA MATCHA

  • Sift matcha in bowl, and slowly pour in the hot water.
  • Using a bamboo whisk, gently mix the two ingredients together until smooth. You can choose to add more or less water if the thickness is not to your liking.

TO MAKE MATCHA AFFOGATO

  • Add 2 scoops of ice cream to your bowl or cup, and slowly pour the koicha matcha over it.
  • Top the koicha matcha affogato with fruit, chocolate shavings and/or nuts if desired. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

Chill your ice cream bowl/glass in the fridge while preparing the koicha matcha. This will help keep your ice cream cold with the warm matcha when serving.
