Earl grey is a tea that many tea drinkers know about. It’s not a type of tea but a tea blend that is quite recognizable within the first sip! When I think of earl grey tea, I think of the traditional blend that is just black tea infused with bergamot oil. Typically the black tea is sourced from India and the bergamot oil is from Italy. However, there are quite a bit of earl grey teas on the market today that consist of more than just those two ingredients. Sometimes you’ll find other citrus flavouring, cornflowers, vanilla and more added to the blend. You can even find earl grey that uses a white or green tea base instead of black. Focusing on the classic earl grey, here are some of my favourite brands.

1. Classic Earl Grey from Teabox
This earl grey tea is made with premium Assam tea leaves and pure bergamot extract.
It offers a malty, and full-bodied cuppa with an very sweet aroma. The bergamot flavour is quite strong, but it pairs perfectly with the strong tea.
Teabox describes this blend as taking “the experience of classic Earl Grey flavors up a notch”. I couldn’t agree more.
If you’re looking for an earl grey tea blend that well-balanced, and doesn’t fail to deliver bold flavours from the tea base, this is your winner!
2. Earl Grey from Vahdam Teas
This earl grey tea is a fine black tea from India blended with natural bergamot oil. It’s not too heavy on the bergamot oil, but it’s still offers strong citrus flavours.
The black tea is malty with a hint of sweetness, rounding out a cuppa perfectly.
Vahdam Teas offers quite a variety of earl grey teas. Since this list is sticking with the classic, I’m only sharing their earl grey citrus black tea, but if you’re interested in a twist on a classic, definitely check out their full earl grey tea line that includes earl grey white tea, earl grey oolong and more.
3. Earl Grey from Teatulia
This earl grey consists of medium-sized black tea leaves blended with bergamot.
The black tea is the star of this blend, as the citrus is prevalent in the dry leaf aroma, but softer when the tea is steeped.
If you’re looking for an earl grey tea that offers more subtle bergamot notes, I would suggest this one. I find this blend to be lighter than others on this recommendation list, but the delicate flavours are not compromised.
4. Earl Grey from Art of Tea
This earl grey tea is made with black tea from Sri Lanka blended with natural oil of bergamot.
The blend is well-balanced – the bergamot oil does not take over the black tea’s flavour profile. It’s smooth, robust and slighty floral.
I usually like my earl grey teas with a splash of milk, however this is one that I think does best on its own. It’s also an award winning earl grey tea — very deserving!
5. Earl Grey Classic from Sloane Tea
Similar to the other earl grey tea blends on this list, this classic from Sloane tea is a black tea with oil of bergamot, and boy is it ever aromatic! Pleasantly so, too.
Sometimes there is chemical like taste with earl grey blends that have an overpowering aroma, but that’s definitely not the case with this one (or the other 4 for that matter).
With strong notes in the citrus department, this is one of my favourites to use when making a London Fog latte (get the recipe here!). It also comes in a beautiful reusable tin.
BONUS EARL GREY:
Lady Betty from Tielka Tea
While this technically isn’t a classic earl grey, I wanted to include this as a bonus because this earl grey inspired blend is a great representation of the variety available.
In fact, this one is excellent if you want to try something different. Something that offers the classic bergamot flavour with a bold black tea but also much more.
This blend is like a combination of a French Earl Grey and a Lady Grey. French earl grey features a floral element like rose petals and Lady grey features more citrus ingredients like sweet orange peels. Tielka’s Lady Betty includes both!

Nice! How do you usually take your earl grey?
Biglow EG, then Positively EG (which screams of green grapes) are my two favorites and the best I’ve come across. I take either with both Wild Mountain honey and fresh squeezed 🍋
