Matcha Mojito (Mocktail or Cocktail)

Back in college, Mondays were the perfect days for a mojito as they were always half off at a local restaurant. It’s funny to think my occasional Mojito Mondays have now turned into regular Matcha Mondays. Nowadays, I’m not really an alcohol fan but I won’t turn away a tea infused cocktail of some kind. When I had the challenge of making some iced tea recipes for my free ebook I started to play around with some matcha green tea first. After gathering the green tea powder, a sprig of mint, limes and other ingredients, I realized I have basically everything here that can make a great tasting mojito. Merging a college memory with my current tea obsession, I created this matcha mojito.

This recipe is also a sneak peek into the free iced tea ebook I released earlier this month with my fellow tea bloggers Tea Thoughts & Thirsty for Tea.

The ebook contains iced tea making tips with 6 refreshing and fun recipes that you can make all summer long. We also created it to coincide with National Iced Tea Month & Day (June 10!)

Each recipe in the ebook uses a different tea, too. For instance, the first recipe in the ebook is one that I made with a green tea and — you guessed it — I used matcha!

So let’s get to this ebook recipe sneak peak, shall we?

Matcha Mojito Recipe

In the ebook this recipe is called a Matcha Mojito Mocktail (or what I like to call, The Triple M!) but with a splash of rum you can easily turn it into a cocktail. I have tried both ways and they are equally refreshing and delicious.

What you’ll need:

MATCHA GREEN TEA POWDER: I have a list of some of my favourite matcha brands on the blog here, but feel free to use your favourite for this recipe.

WATER: Since we’re making a hot green tea first you’ll want to heat your water to 160 degrees Fahrenheit.

PURE MAPLE SYRUP: This is my sweetener of choice and I also wanted to add a Canadian flare to the recipe with this ingredient. You can also use mint simple syrup for even more cool minty flavour.

LIMES: Slices for muddling and garnishing and also lime juice

MINT: Leaves for muddling and garnishing (this is also the best time of the year to make a matcha mojito because gardens are crowding with fresh mint!)

ICE: Simply because you want this to be cool and refreshing!

*OPTIONAL: Rum to make it into a cocktail and/or club soda (I don’t always like carbonated beverages so it’s not in this recipe but feel free to add a splash if you want!)matcha mojito matcha mojito
One of the important steps in this recipe is to muddle the mint and lime together in your serving glass before doing anything else. This simply means to press the ingredients together with a muddler.

Muddling the ingredients will help release the flavours quicker, which is necessary in this recipe since it’s a quick mix – not something you’ll let steep together for a while.

You can find muddlers that are made from wood or stainless steel. However, if you don’t have one, you can use the end of a wooden spoon. Make sure your serving glass is sturdy so you don’t risk breaking it with the muddler.
