Matcha Green Tea Slushie

I somehow always forget how hot it can get in the summer time. Even though I live in Canada with polar bears there are days it gets way too humid and I’m super grateful for air conditioning indoors. However, outside I rely on cool drinks. Ice is something you’ll find in my teas during the humid days. If you follow me on Instagram you may have noticed I’ve been making matcha ice cubes this summer as a quick way to add them to drinks for iced teas and iced lattes. The simple process of making green tea ice cubes can lead to many cool down creations, including this recipe for a matcha green tea slushie.

If you’re subscribed to my blog’s newsletter, then you already got a peak at this sweet green recipe. Matcha green tea slushie is a light and incredibly refreshing cool down treat.

A slushie is essentially just a frozen flavoured drink and not much else. You can simply blend a prepared bowl of matcha and blend that with ice cubes.

However, I find that method waters down the flavour a bit too much for my liking. That’s how the step to make matcha ice cubes was brought to life.

Aside from having to wait for the ice cubes to set, the recipe takes only a few minutes and requires only 3 ingredients. Prepare the matcha ice cubes in advance so that you’re always ready in case of that heat wave coming soon.

Matcha Green Tea Slushie

Yield: 1
Prep Time: 2 hours
Additional Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 2 hours 5 minutes

With just a few ingredients you can create a delicious slushie with the popular matcha green tea. Perfect for the hot weather!

Ingredients

For the Matcha Ice Cubes

  • 8 oz water
  • 2-3 teaspoons matcha green tea

For the Slushie

  • 1 cup matcha ice cubes
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 1 tablespoon real maple syrup (or another sweetener of your choice)

Instructions

    For the Matcha Ice Cubes
    1. In a mason jar, scoop in your matcha green tea and add in cool water.

    2. Seal with a lid and shake rigorously to get rid of clumps as much as possible while mixing it in well.

    3. Pour the cool matcha green tea mixture into an ice cube tray.

    4. Place in the freezer until solid. Once frozen, get ready to make a slushie!

    For the Slushie
    1. Place the matcha ice cubes, cold water and your sweetener in a high-powered blender (or a blender strong enough to crush ice), cover and blend until you reach a slush consistency. If you prefer a thinner slushie, add more cold water. Be careful not to over blend as it will end up too runny. If this happens, add in more matcha ice cubes.

    2. Pour in a glass and serve immediately (or else it will lose the slushie-like consistency!).

    3. Store any leftovers in the freezer.

Want extra flavour? Here are some add-in ideas for your Matcha Green Tea Slushie:

Watermelon: Chop up cubes of watermelon and toss them in the blender with the matcha green tea ice cubes. You may not even need to add your sweetener here because the fruit does its job!

Mint: Fresh mint leaves are wonderful and a great addition to iced teas and pairs nicely with matcha. Consider adding some to the blender with the matcha green tea ice cubes and sweetener.

White Chocolate Syrup: There are an insane amount of chocolate matcha desserts out there. Chocolate and tea always seem to go so well together. If you want to make your slushie a bit more decadent, add in some chocolate syrup when blending. You can use any chocolate you want, but white will keep it green. Again, you may not need to add your sweetener here then.

Milk: Whether it is dairy free or not, adding milk to your matcha green tea slushie will give it a frozen latte look and taste.

Booze: Yup, I’m going there. A boozy matcha slushie sounds like the perfect adult drink to me. Add a splash of your alcohol of choice to the blender and spike it up! (Bonus: the extra bit of liquid may help the ice blend better, especially if you don’t have a high powered blender)

  1. I just bought a matcha frappe from a coffee shop that was almost $7! With your recipe, I can recreate something similar at home, at a fraction of the price. Thank you!
