Messages in your Tea Cup: Tasseography

Tasseomancy is the art and practice of divination by the interpretation of symbolic patterns made by tea leaves in a teacup. It hearkens back to days of old and the Inductive divinatory art form of the Shamans.

I received my first ever tea leaf reading back when I was in school in Hamilton, Ontario. I enjoyed every bit of it (especially the amazing cake I devoured at the end haha). Before heading to the reading I never really knew too much about tea leaf reading and how it was done. I was always interested in tarot card readings and was curious as to how my future could be told with my used tea leaves. Looking back, to my surprise the predictions were accurate and I have been in love with finding messages in tea cups ever since!

Just recently my boyfriend bought me a tea leaf reading for beginners book and I have been soaking in all the information I can. I plan to blog a review for the book later on, perhaps when I’m completed it. I treat the book as a leisurely read but more as a textbook to study.

Tidbits for Beginners

To begin a reading for yourself you must select a loose leaf tea that has plenty of variation of colour and leaf. Some loose teas have flowers and spices in them, and these are fine for tea leaf reading as well. It is recommended that you begin with a black tea, as the lighter coloured green or white teas take a little bit of practice.

The best tea cups for reading are white or light coloured inside, so that you can see the leaves clearly. You will also need the saucer to read the leaves, as the cup is upturned and turned around. When you have drunk the tea almost to the bottom, swirl it gently to let the leaves stick to the sides of the cup. Then you will turn the cup over to examine the pictures that are revealed with your tea leaves.

The author of the Tea Leaf Reading For Beginners book I have is Caroline Dow. She also has written a great, informative article regarding 10 Tips for Giving Dynamite Tea Leaf Readings.

Be sure to come back to find out more I learn on my journey through her book as well!

  1. Thanks Victoria. The book is really well written and has a lot of additional information as well (ie. suitable teas to use based on zodiac sign) I can't wait to read it all 🙂

  2. Very cool. Thanks for sharing this with me on Twitter (@WarmTea). I was wondering how tea leaf readings worked, and it makes sense. Have you ever tried I-Ching divination? That is also pretty interesting, and is a very old method of divination. Anyway, thanks again! See you in the Twitter universe, and please let me know if you decide to post on this topic again. Take care. 🙂
