The Perfect Cold Relief Tea On The Go

One of the worst things about feeling under the weather is not being able to properly experience your tea. I still try to put the kettle on and steep teas because it is something that feels great, even though I may not really taste it. However, last month when I was feeling under the weather I tried taking tasting notes for an oolong but I failed miserably. Suggestions to just rest and try herbal teas that were more ginger and lemon focused came my way. With many things to do and places to go, I needed something to get me through the day. I started making this homemade cold relief tea daily in my trusty Tea Time Bottle.

Ginger, lemon and honey have always been my go-to items when I haven’t been feeling well. I can actually still manage to smell the strong ginger, so that’s a plus, and the lemon and honey soothe my throat. However, I don’t just combine those items in boiling water and call it a day…

I like to add chamomile, too. Don’t worry – you’re not going to fall asleep if you have this during a sick work day (Note: You should be resting though. Go home, you’re sick!). The addition offers a tranquil and calming effect which is perfect because I’m not exactly the most chill person when I’m sick. Maybe you can relate? Haha.

I opt for a tisane instead of a true tea simply because, as I mentioned in the beginning, I don’t like to feel like I’m wasting my actual teas when I can’t taste them well. Caffeine doesn’t seem to affect me much, but it still helps to make sure a cold relief tea (tisane!) is as gentle as possible.

Throwing all of these items together in a tea tumbler makes it much easier for the “to-go” aspect of this recipe. I really enjoy using this Tea Time Glass Bottle from Full Circle. I was first attracted to this tea time bottle because of the sleek, clean design. After using it almost daily last month, I realized it was much more than just a pretty object. It hold 19 ounces of liquid, which is perfect size for this cold relief tea recipe. It is BPA-free, heat resistant (the cork sleeve is removable but needed here with this boiling hot tea recipe) and the twist-to-lock lid was made for people like me. Did I mention I’m extra clumsy when sick, too?

The strainer for this tea bottle is at the bottom (see image above) and that’s where I place my teas or, in this case, tisane. If you don’t have just chamomile but a tea blend with it, feel free to use that in this recipe instead and just make sure to use the proper water temperature (ie. don’t use boiling water if it’s a green tea blend). The rest of the ingredients in the recipe below are added directly in the glass bottle.

  1. I wish I would’ve had that tea last week when I was sick with a cold. And that bottle would be really nice to have, too. Will have to grab one of those.
