Simple Matcha Smoothie

Often times I find that we are complicating smoothies. Have you ever looked at a smoothie recipe before and wonder why there are so many ingredients in a small drink? Sure, they can be filled with superfoods, but I think simple smoothies are the way to go. This is especially true when it’s a tea infused smoothie because too many ingredients can mask the tea’s flavour. My go-to lately has been this simple matcha smoothie. Matcha can have a strong taste in smoothies but the taste could hide depending on what you combine it with. I like to be able to taste my tea. I mean, that’s why I’m adding it in the first place.

I had the flu last week and all I really wanted were smoothies and my homemade cold relief tea.

This Simple Matcha Smoothie was a regular because it was quick to make and so rewarding. All it takes is 5 ingredients (6 if you’re counting the optional one) and 5 minutes.

If you have never used frozen bananas in a smoothie before, you’re missing out! Seriously. Frozen bananas are a staple for my smoothies because they make them nice and cold (who wants a warm smoothie?!) and they make them sooooooo creamy!

The spinach adds more vitamins and a vibrant green colour with the matcha green tea, too. I also added in fresh ginger because that’s another staple for me when I’m sick.

The optional ingredient is protein powder. Sometimes I make it without, but when I do add it in my favourite brand is Vega. In this particular smoothie, I used their French Vanilla Vega One Nutritional Shake.

With these few ingredients, this green smoothie really just tastes like a creamy ginger matcha shake. Every time I sip it I wonder if I forgot to add spinach because I can never taste it (sidenote: the spinach is never forgotten).

*Note: Don’t use your ceremonial grade matcha for this. If you have a culinary grade, be sure to use that instead for the smoothie (here’s the one I used). Save the ceremonial stuff for hot tea.

  1. Love matcha! My family stayed away from smoothies until I snuck in some spinach and kale into one…then realized you really couldn’t taste any of it.

  4. Okay, I don’t understand this thing with matcha. People seem to be obsessed with it! I was so excited to finally try a matcha latte this summer, and was so sad to discover it tasted like eating grass! Maybe I just got a bad one??

    • It’s definitely possible to have tried a bad matcha. There are many different qualities out there. The best quality matcha should be vibrant green (sometimes you’ll find brownish coloured ones..), from Japan and not bitter at all. I hope you’ll get a chance to try it again and love it ☺
